Slippery customer a thorn in Roses' sides

Grainne Cunningham

ALWAYS look on the bright side of life . . . and if you are handed a python called Brian, you know not to take things too seriously.

But while these Roses were keen to ensure that Brian was not pulling their leg, he was a little too frisky for South Australia rose Bridget O'Connell, right.

The trio, including London rose Clare Kambamettu, left, and Washington DC rose Katherine Walsh, were enjoying a VIP tour of Dublin Zoo when they were invited to get up close and personal with the rather slippery gentleman.

Thankfully they'll all be safe on the arm of an escort as the Rose of Tralee festival kicks off in Kerry this weekend.

Elsewhere, Letrim rose Martha Gilheaney and Kerry rose Veronica Hunt were enjoying some valuable downtime at the Carlton Airport Hotel, Dublin, before the whirlwind begins.

The festival, which runs from Friday to next Tuesday, promises a cornucopia of carnival, fun and gala events.

The highlight will be the International Rose Selection screened live on RTE on Monday and Tuesday night, with Daithi O Se hosting for the first time.
