Grainne Cunningham

On at least two days in different locations this summer, roads will close to all traffic except cyclists.

On August 21 in Co Clare almost 130km of road closures will take place for the second annual Sky Ride Etape Hibernia. And Sky Ride Dublin will entail 8km of the capital's streets closing to traffic on September 11.

The free event, organised jointly by Sky TV and Dublin City Council, will allow thousands of people to get on their bikes and cycle freely around the city.

The route for the event, of which Westlife's Nicky Byrne and style queen Lisa Fitzpatrick are the official ambassadors, will be available shortly on

Irish cycling legend Sean Kelly said both casual cyclists and hardcore racers would enjoy the Etape Hibernia, which is the only non-professional cycling event which sees roads closed across an entire county.

Mr Kelly is both an ambassador and a confirmed participant in the event, which is open to all standards of cyclists.
