Skills boost for more workers and jobseekers
Increasing numbers of workers and jobseekers are being trained up to meet the changing skill needs in companies.
The government-funded Skillnets programme saw a 10pc rise, to over 44,000, in the number of those who underwent training last year. Skillnets works with groups of companies that come together to address training needs.
The trainee figures include over 7,000 jobseekers – an increase of over 1,000 on 2011.
Skillnets chairman Domhnall MacDomhnaill said that employer needs were addressed through the focus on skills to maintain businesses and protect jobs.
The total spend of Skillnets during the year was €23.9m, including a €10.9m contribution from companies.
