Six years for rape attack after all-day drink, drugs binge

A MAN has been jailed for six years for raping a woman after a day spent smoking cannabis and drinking vodka and lager.

Raymond Cronin (20) of Victoria Terrace, South Circular Road, Limerick, pleaded guilty at the Circuit Criminal Court to rape and oral rape of the woman and assault causing her harm on February 10 2004.

The court heard that Cronin repeatedly banged the woman's head on the floor while raping her and hit her when she resisted.

Mr Justice Paul Carney noted that the rapes were committed with considerable violence. He imposed six-year sentences on each rape charge and three years for assault.

He suspended the final 18 months of the six-year rape sentences because he said Cronin took "proactive steps" to bring his case forward at the earliest possible opportunity, which freed a slot for dealing with another violent person.

Earlier, the victim told the court she had trusted Cronin and that he had taken away her life. She would never forget what he did to her.

Despite his abuse of drugs and drink, Cronin had no history of sexual or other violence of any type.

Initially he claimed they had been "kissing and cuddling" and things got out of control but later admitted sexually assaulting the victim and told a detective that if he had his revolver he would shoot himself.
