THEY almost pulled it off.
Hundreds of people braved the wind and rain yesterday in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest number of people simultaneously pulling a Christmas cracker.
Schoolchildren, business people and workers from Google and Facebook gathered en masse at Hanover Quay at Dublin's Grand Canal Dock at lunchtime in an attempt to break the current record of 500 pulls.
But they fell short by just 40.
Carphone Warehouse, which organised the event to raise funds for the Simon Community homeless charity, vowed to give it another go in the near future.
The company, however, said it would still donate €10,000 to the charity.
