Silent tribute to Famine

SCHOOLCHILDREN across the country yesterday held a minute's silence for the victims of the Great Famine.

Our picture shows schoolchildren from St Patrick's and St Brigid's National Schools in Drogheda, marking the event yesterday at Chord Cemetery, Drogheda, Co Louth. Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Heritage Minister Jimmy Deenihan will be among the dignitaries attending this year's National Famine Commemoration on Sunday in the town.

An international event, led by President Michael D Higgins, took place in Boston last week.
