The wife of Cabra shooting victim David Douglas has said that he is a "lucky man" to have survived the attack.

Convicted drug dealer David Douglas (54) was shot in a drive-by attack at his home.

The father-of-one suffered at least three gunshot wounds to his chest after a car pulled up alongside him as he was walking his dog.

His wife Yumei said that he was on the mend.

"Thank God he is still alive, that's all I can say," she said.

"He's OK at the moment."

"He will need another operation. He's able to talk, sit up and he has tried to walk. He is a strong man ... it's just so stressful."

The attack took place on the Killala Road, Cabra on November 8 at around 7.30pm

On April 10, 2008, Douglas and three other men were stopped in a taxi as part of a surveillance operation in the Pearse Street area, following a tip-off.

A black holdall bag containing 8kg of cocaine, worth €562,000, was recovered by gardai.

Douglas was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with five suspended, in relation to the seizure.

But Ms Douglas also said that her husband has turned his life around since he was released from jail two years ago.

"I don't care about whatever his history is, but he's on the good way now," she said.

"Since he is out [of prison] two years ago, he didn't do anything wrong. I know he has some background history, but that's the past. Everybody wants to change."

Ms Douglas said that she would continue to support him.

"I'm from China and if you try to do good, you will get a chance to make your life," she said.

The couple, who met 13 years ago when she was working in a bar near Douglas's house, run a retail business selling shoes in Dublin's south city.

"It's a happy life for me and him ... he enjoys his life and he loves all of us and his family," Ms Douglas added.
