Short-staffed teachers' body can't handle calls

THE Teaching Council has said it can't handle all the phone calls made to it, due to a lack of staff, writes Katherine Donnelly.

Teacher frustration at trying to get through to the regulatory body was aired at the Oireachtas committee on education yesterday by Fine Gael's Mary Mitchell O'Connor.

Calls for general queries are restricted to 9.00-10.30am and 2.00-4.30pm, and there is also a special line, open all day, for queries relating to new legislation requiring all teachers to be registered in order to get paid next year.

That legislation, known as Section 30, has increased the volume of work being handled by the council this summer.

Teachers are being encouraged to email their queries.

Council director Tomas O Ruairc said it wanted to increase its staff and had the necessary funding for it, but said it was prevented from doing so by the Government's moratorium on the numbers of public service employees.
