Shortall seeks total ban on alcohol sponsorship
ALL alcohol sponsorship of sport and cultural events will be completely banned in the next eight years under plans being considered by the Government, writes Fiach Kelly.
Renewal of current sponsorship deals will also be prohibited, but this measure would be introduced immediately rather than in 2020.
There will also be an immediate cap on the amount of money alcohol companies can spend on sponsoring events, according to the plans being pushed by junior health minister Roisin Shortall.
But the contentious measures have met opposition from some members of Cabinet, both Labour and Fine Gael, as well as from the drinks industry.
Health Minister James Reilly will be ultimately responsible for driving the measures through, but sources claimed he had found himself "caught in the middle, being pushed by Ms Shortall".
But Ms Shortall yesterday said Dr Reilly had "been very supportive". "I would be very hopeful that we will have a Public Health (alcohol) Bill by September," she said.
