Shoppers begin buying for beach

"The sunshine this week really got people thinking about swimwear," said an Arnotts spokeswoman.

Balconette and bandeau bikinis, strapless one pieces and flattering cutaway bikinis were the centre of the attention . . . and it's not all about the itsy bitsy bikini either.

The Bridget Jones' signature 'big knickers' look has been crossed with Art Deco styling, which is very on trend with the release of 'The Great Gatsby' movie next week. French brand Huit combined the two looks in a €113 black bikini, pictured top, which received lots of admiring looks.

Meanwhile, Tesco's F&F fashion range is enjoying a major retail bounce here after launching an advertising campaign featuring ex- Victoria's Secret model Amy Hixson wearing a €15 hibiscus print swimsuit, pictured above, which has become the retail hit of the weekend. A Tesco spokeswoman confirmed that sales of swimwear are brisk, starting at €7, while the swimwear in the ads runs from €15 to €25.
