A man who was shot in Shercock, County Cavan last night has been named locally as Joseph Kierans.

Mr Kierans was shot in the leg with a handgun after being confronted by two men on the doorstep of his girlfriend’s single storey house.

The shooting took place at about  9.45pm and Mr Kieran’s girlfriend was present in the house at the time.

More than one shot may have been discharged and a bullet hole was clearly visible in a window pane in the front door frame of the house.

Joseph Kierans is known to gardai and a garda source said they are following one line of enquiry.

Two weeks ago Joseph Kierans was convicted at Cavan Circuit Court of Aggravated Burglary against on a pensioner in his eighties in the Shercock area and received a four year suspended sentence. However, gardai do not believe at this time that Friday’s gun attack is linked to this crime.

Garda forensics experts were at the scene yesterday and sealed off the house as they undertook a technical examination.

Mr Kieran’s girlfriend appeared at the scene on Saturday morning but refused to comment on the shooting.

She angrily told reporters: “What are you doing here. You have no right to be here.”

A neighbour of the Mr Kierans who also lives in the estate said: “ I don’t know him that well. He has only been living there a few months. That is his girlfriend’s house.”

Mr Kierans was removed by Ambulance to Cavan General Hospital on Friday night. He was released from hospital on Saturday morning.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Bailieboro Garda Station at 042-9694570 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.
