Shock and sadness as businessman (50s) killed and 11-year-old girl injured in crash involving car and bus

A man was killed and five people were taken to hospital following a crash involving a bus and a car in County Roscommon today.

The driver of the car died at the scene and an 11-year-old girl who was travelling with him in the car was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the bus and three bus passengers were also taken to hospital.

The crash happened on the R446, the old road between Athlone and Ballinasloe, at Ballydangan.

The crash involving the Mercedes car and large bus happened shortly after 10am.

The man who died was named locally as Thomas Campbell, a businessman from Ballinasloe, County Galway.

He was aged in his 50s. His body was removed to Roscommon Hospital.

The injured girl was taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe.

The injured bus driver and bus passengers were also taken to Portiuncula Hospital for treatment for minor injuries.

Nine other passengers on the bus escaped injury.

A section of the road was closed to facilitate a forensic examination of the scene of the fatal crash.

Local people expressed shock and sadness at the death of Mr Campbell.

They expressed relief that the child escaped serious injury. They said they hoped all the injured make a speedy recovery following the accident.

Gardaí in Roscommon appealed for witnesses.

They want to hear from anyone travelling on the R446 from Ballinasloe to Athlone between 9.30am and 10.15am yesterday to contact them at Roscommon Garda Station  by telephoning 090 6638300 or by contacting  the Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800-666-111 or any garda station.
