Detective Garda Kevin Clarke (53) re-dyed his grey hair black before shaving it off altogether as part of Today FM's 'Shave or Dye' campaign for the Irish Cancer Society.

And he managed to convince eight garda colleagues to take part and lose their locks.

They lined up in the Stillorgan Orchard pub in front of 100 friends and colleagues to have their heads shaved and raise €4,000.

Meanwhile, students and teachers at Donabate Portrane Educate Together National School in Dublin also took part in an event for the campaign yesterday.

Around 485 of the school's pupils arrived for school at 8.45am with crazy hair.

"We have really enjoyed doing this and hope to raise a serious amount of money," Mr Garvey said.

This year's 'Shave or Dye' campaign has involved over 11,000 events and participants all over the country and has already raised over €463,000.
