Shatter hits out at those stuck in policing past
JUSTICE Minister Alan Shatter has hit out at politicians and commentators who are "nostalgically looking back" on the policing model of 50 years ago, writes Breda Heffernan.
Addressing the Justice Select Committee, Mr Shatter insisted morale among gardai is "very high" and there was a tendency on the part of representative bodies to say otherwise.
He told deputies that the force had undergone many changes over the past 18 months – such as reforms of garda rosters – and there has been a lot of "smart policing".
Mr Shatter was addressing the committee on supplementary estimates for the gardai and the Courts Service for 2012.
