Senator's trips paid for by drug companies
INDEPENDENT senator and cancer specialist Professor John Crown, whose trips to four conferences last year were paid for by drug companies, said it made more sense to take money from their "deep pockets" than from research charities.
Prof Crown, who made the declaration of payments in the latest register of members' interests in the Seanad, confirmed he attended cancer conferences in Chicago, San Antonio, and twice in Vienna.
His expenses were paid for by different pharmaceutical companies sponsoring the events including Pfizer and Novartis.
He said it was a "great way to get drug companies to put money back into the system".
Asked if he was influenced by his attendance at these meetings he said his track record showed that he was not.
