Seized explosives part of Provisional IRA haul not decommissioned
SEMTEX explosives seized by gardai during an operation against dissident republicans is believed to have been part of a Provisional IRA haul that was not decommissioned.
As part of the Northern Ireland peace process the IRA agreed to decommission all of its arms and explosives.
But senior police officers on both sides of the Border have been convinced since the ceasefire that a number of terrorist hides, under the control of rogue quartermasters, were not emptied and handed over to the decommission commission.
Fifteen kilos of Semtex – found in a dissident cache on the old airport road in Cloghran, in north county Dublin – are thought to have come from one of those hides.
Gardai said the seizure put a major dent in the arsenal of the dissident groups and also saved lives.
Also seized were bomb components, an Uzi submachine gun, handguns, shoguns, silencers, 1,300 rounds of ammunition and a range of electronic equipment.
