Second man charged in crime gang crackdown

A second man has appeared in court in Galway in connection with a major garda investigation into organised crime, writes Brian McDonald.

Mark Dowling (20) of Castle Park, Ballybane, Galway, was taken before a special sitting of Galway District Court just after 9pm last night.

The charges were that -- between July 23, 2009, and June 1, 2010 -- Mr Dowling, knowing that a criminal organisation existed, took part in an activity to enhance the ability of this organisation to commit a serious offence, the possession of cannabis with intent to supply.

The court heard that when arrested at Tuam garda station yesterday and charged, Mr Dowling replied: "Ok, I understand."

Counsel for the defence said he was consenting to a remand in custody to Galway District Court on June 9.

An application for legal aid was also approved.

At the same court, a successful application was made for an extension to the period of detention of another Galway man arrested by gardai earlier this week.
