Search underway in Galway Bay after swimmer failed to return to shore

Rescue teams will resume their search on Friday morning in Galway Bay after a swimmer failed to return to shore at Salthill today.

Gardaí, the Irish Coast Guard helicopter R115 and the RNLI are all involved in the search off Blackrock, Salthill.

There are also two units of the fire service involved.

The swimmer is understood to be a man, aged in his late thirties or early forties.

The alarm was raised by a member of the public at about 5pm.

The search has been called off overnight but will resume at first light on Friday morning.

Volunteers from Costelloe Bay Coastguard, the Irish Coast Guard helicopter R115 and Galway Bay RNLI will take part in the search operation.
