A major air and sea search is underway after a car went off a cliff in Co Cork on Thursday evening.

Emergency services were called to the scene at the Old Head of Kinsale at 7.30pm.

The vehicle was seen entering the water.

Gardaí at Anglesea Street in Cork contacted Valentia Coastguard and they scrambled the coastguard at the Old Head of Kinsale.

They are joined in the search operation by lifeboats from Kinsale and Courtmacsherry.

Rescue 117 helicopter from Waterford is also attending the scene.

The car is currently submerged and rescue workers are hoping that they will be able to access it at low tide, which was due at approximately 2.30am.
