THE coast guard’s rescue helicopter which was searching for a fisherman who fell overboard in choppy seas off the south west coast has had to return to base due to poor visibility.

An emergency call was received by Valencia coat guard around 6.30pm this evening from Spanish authorities who advised a fisherman aboard a Spanish registered vessel had gone overboard around 40 nautical miles off the Kerry coast.

The man entered the water around 4.20pm.

The coast guard declared a mayday situation and rescue helicopter 115 was tasked as well as the Valencia lifeboat to assist the Spanish vessel in the search for the fisherman.

However due to “zero visibility conditions” Rescue 115 was returned to base. It will return to help in the search when conditions improve, a spokesman said.

The navy ship LE Aisling is now being prepared to assist the search efforts. The lifeboat is continuing the search.
