SDLP man is new Mayor of Belfast

Gary Kelly

SDLP councillor Martin Morgan was last night elected to succeed Sinn Fein's Alex Maskey as Belfast's Lord Mayor.

Mr Morgan, who represents North Belfast, beat off the challenge of two unionist candidates - Bob Stoker of the UUP and Robin Newton of the DUP - who received 14 votes and 10 votes respectively.

The three votes of the Alliance party gave Mr Morgan the 26 votes needed to win an overall majority.

He is the second SDLP councillor to hold the post. His colleague Alban Maginness became the first nationalist Lord Mayor of the city in 1997. Accepting the mayoral chain from the outgoing Lord Mayor, Councillor Maskey, Mr Morgan said he would continue the work of his SDLP predecessor, Mr Maginness.
