Schoolmates visit Manuela murder site
A group of Swiss students made a poignant journey yesterday to the place where a schoolmate was killed, writes Brian McDonald.
The 50 students, from Fribourg, arrived in Galway to mark the fourth anniversary of the death of 17-year-old Manuela Riedo.
Manuela was murdered as she took a short-cut from her host home in Renmore to meet friends in the city on October 8, 2007. She arrived in Galway with a group from her school to learn English just three days earlier.
Her body was found alongside the Galway-Dublin railway by a man out walking the next morning.
Gerald Barry, now 32, from Mervue, was convicted of her murder. Barry was also subsequently convicted of two counts of raping a French student in Galway in August 2007. He is currently serving three life sentences.
A gala fundraising concert will take place in Salthill on Saturday. Manuela's parents, Hans- Peter and Arlette, will be guests of honour.
