A 16-year-old has died after taking part in a hike with friends from school.
Neil Quinlan, from Cabinteely in south Dublin, had just finished a hike in Glendalough, Co Wicklow when he suddenly took ill.
The youngster, a student of St Conleth's College in Ballsbridge, was one of a group taking part in a 10km hike on Tuesday.
He had returned to his hostel accommodation when he complained of feeling unwell and collapsed in front of his friends. Neil was airlifted to Tallaght Hospital but died a short time later.
"The whole school is just numb. Neil, or 'Quinner' as they called him, was extremely popular," school manager and former principal Kevin Kelleher said.
A message on the school's website confirmed the transition year student, who was a former pupil of Blackrock College, had "passed away suddenly".
A special assembly was held in the school yesterday to inform students.
