VANDALS caused extensive damage to a girls' primary school after they seized a digger and smashed it through the roof of a newly constructed extension.

The new extension at the John the Baptist School in Cashel, Co Tipperary, estimated to cost around €100,000, was due to open for the start of the new school term in September.

The attack took place around 4am on Thursday morning. A car was also set on fire on the same morning several hundred yards from the school.

Gardai are investigating whether the two incidents are related.

Officers are examining CCTV in an effort to catch the vandals.

No arrests have been made.

The digger was being used in the construction of the new extension which was almost complete.

Parish Priest in Cashel Fr Christy O'Dwyer described the attack as an "affront to the community" and attack on the "most vulnerable" in the town.
