GARDAI have recovered a sawn-off rifle after spotting a bag being dumped.
Plain-clothed gardai were on a patrol in Drimnagh in south Dublin when they seized the weapon. They spotted a group of men acting suspiciously at Benbulben Road and went to investigate.
The officers carried out a search of the area and found a bag containing the bolt-action .22 rifle, which had a sawn-off barrel. They believe the gun, which was undergoing forensic tests last night, is part of an arsenal belonging to a gang involving associates of south city crime figure Freddie Thompson.
The patrol was part of Operation Acer, which was set up to combat the spate of burglaries in the capital in recent years.
