Salmon farms considered for west coast

BORD Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) is looking into locations for organic salmon farms off the coast of Kerry, Mayo and Donegal which could create hundreds of local jobs.

The state fishing authority has confirmed it is investigating the possibility of projects similar to a planned fish farm off the coast of the Aran Islands which is going through the planning process with Galway County Council.

If the Galway project gets the go-ahead it's expected to create up to 500 jobs locally, mainly in the processing sector on land, with about 65 jobs at sea.

BIM is to meet fishermen in west Kerry in the coming weeks to identify preliminary sites for salmon farms.
