RTE brings back familiar faces for new live show
MEET the presenters of RTE's new afternoon show -- including three former presenters of past afternoon shows.
RTE's new hour-long show 'Today' will be fronted by former 'Four Live' star Maura Derrane, former 'Daily Show' presenter Daithi O Se, past presenter of the 'Afternoon Show' Blathnaid Ni Chofaigh and publishing entrepreneur Norah Casey.
Ms Derrane (42) said that 'Today' -- to be broadcast live from Cork -- would be "fresh", with more audience interaction.
"The reality is you have got people here that have experience. You can't launch a new show with people who have never done this type of show. It is live," said Ms Derrane, who is based in Dungarvan, Co Waterford, with her husband, Fine Gael TD John Deasy.
Steve Carson, director of programmes for RTE Television, said it would be the first time "such an important part of our schedule" would be produced from Cork.
The broadcaster has been cutting costs and revamping programmes as it tries to balance its budget, with the deficit for this year estimated at €57m.
As well as the title sponsorship of Harvey Norman Sofas, RTE will run sponsorship segments to generate funding.
The new show will focus on lifestyle items, entertainment, home and garden, parenting and children. Mr O Se said he believed the show would benefit from being outside Dublin 4.
"I think people do like familiar faces. It would have been very easy for RTE to turn around and say 'new show, new faces' but thankfully they think it is going to work," he said.
The show will start on November 5, on RTE One, hosted by Ms Derrane and Mr O Se from Monday to Thursday, with Ms Casey and Ms Ni Chofaigh taking over on Friday.
