The RTÉ Philharmonic Choir has pulled off a world first - by singing the European anthem 'Ode to Joy' from the inner chamber of Newgrange.

A small group of choristers sung the first verse a capella, before joining the rest of their ranks outside for the second verse.

Yesterday's event was part of a challenge set by heritage organisation Europa Nostra and its president, famed Spanish tenor Placido Domingo, to celebrate the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 by singing the anthem at a heritage site.

Clare Tuffy of the Office of Public Works said the decision to stage the performance of the Beethoven masterpiece at Newgrange was fitting as "passage tombs are tangible evidence of trans-European cultural connections from earliest times".
