RNLI braves Arctic weather to rescue crew
VOLUNTEERS with the RNLI braved biting winds and frigid temperatures to rescue the crew of a fishing trawler that was stranded 40 miles out to sea.
The seven-member volunteer lifeboat crew from Kilmore Quay in Co Wexford battled extremely difficult conditions to rescue the five-member crew from Duncannon, Co Wexford, from their 23-metre fishing boat that had experienced engine failure 40 miles south of the harbour on Sunday morning.
The crew was called out around 8am and was able to tow the trawler back to shore as conditions worsened.
"It was a bad day for a callout but the fishing vessel needed our assistance and the weather was worsening by the hour," said lifeboat crew member Aidan Bates.
