River rescue for wheelie bin

A MYSTERY object that sparked a search operation in the Shannon River turned out to be a wheelie bin.

The Irish Coast Guard was scrambled after an object was spotted in the water close to Parteen Weir on the border of Limerick, Clare and Tipperary.

At the time it wasn't clear whether the object was a person in difficulty, an overturned boat or some debris being washed down river.

The mystery object was found to be a wheelie bin, which the coast guard said could have been a hazard to navigation in the area.
