River dance a cool way to start the new year

While the rest of the country struggled with water supplies, this hardy bunch plunged into the icy depths for a good cause.

The water shortage was the last thing on the minds of these Co Donegal residents, who yesterday took a new year dip in the icy Laghey River, in Laghey village, to raise funds for the village Christmas lights and the Laghey Blast Festival, held every May bank holiday.

Striding under the Seven Arches bridge were men in baby costumes, pink hotpants, a space suit -- and one brave woman in a Scooby Doo costume.
