Rising young GAA star (19) dies crossing road

A YOUNG GAA star has died after he was struck by a car while trying to cross the road.

Gardaí at Drogheda are appealing for information about the fatal road traffic collision that occurred on the old N1, 5 miles north of Drogheda, at approximately 8.30pm last night.

Shane, Whelan (19) was fatally injured when he was struck by a car while attempting to cross the road. The male driver of the vehicle was uninjured.

The victim is understood to be a part-time employee at the nearby Monasterboice Inn pub and was a promising footballer with the local Naomh Mairtin club.

Mr Whelan's body was removed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital where a full post mortem is to be arranged.

The Monasterboice exit from the M1 travelling south was closed overnight to facilitate Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and has since reopened.
