Rise in new car numbers
The number of new cars licensed so far this year has risen to almost 70,000, it emerged today.
Official figures show more than 7,000 were licence last month, a dip from June but up 60pc from July 2009.
There was a 3.8pc rise in new goods vehicles licensed, up to 871, while a further 3,382 used or imported cars were registered.
The most popular new cars in July were Volkswagen, with 911 licensed, followed by Opel with 898, Ford with 774 and Toyota on 687.
The Central Statistics Office said 93,473 cars have been licensed since January - including 68,379 new and 25,094 used or imported.
