Reverend's son doing well after op
THE son of the Anglican minister who famously traced US President Barack Obama's Irish roots is conscious and sitting up after undergoing surgery for a brain tumour, writes Edel O'Connell.
Stephen Neill and his wife Nicola were holidaying in the Canary Island of Tenerife when their only child, Aaron (14), collapsed on Saturday. The teenager was immediately rushed to hospital.
The reverend, who met Mr Obama and his wife, Michelle, during their visit to Moneygall, Co Offaly, in May, and his wife waited anxiously as their son underwent emergency surgery.
It was feared Aaron had suffered substantial brain damage. However, Mr Neill said the medical team in Tenerife was pleased with his son's progress.
Mr Neill last night told the Irish Independent his son was undergoing tests to determine the full nature of the condition, and to see whether he would need more surgery.
