THE taxman will be in charge of collecting the property tax when it is introduced next year.

The Government decided today at its last cabinet meeting before the Summer break to give the Revenue Commissioners the power to collect the new property tax.

The decision follows the difficulties with collecting the €100 household charge this year.

A Government spokesman said handing over the responsibility to Revenue was “deemed the most efficient way to collect it”.

The detail of the property tax will be discussed by the Government tax in October.

The coalition is still planning to bring in the property tax to replace the household charge next year.

“That’s the stated Government intention to move to bring in a property tax next year,” a spokesman said.
