Revenue Commissioners defend call-recording policy
THE Revenue Commissioners have been forced to defend their policy of recording phone calls, insisting that it is "strictly controlled" to prevent confidentiality breaches.
They issued a statement in response to Dublin MEP Paul Murphy, who had claimed that the organisation had suspended the use of its recording system because of data-protection concerns.
A Revenue spokeswoman said tapings of conversations with members of the public had not been suspended but, instead, a new system was being configured "to better support the needs" of individual sections.
However, when this was put to Mr Murphy, he stood over his comment.
The Revenue spokeswoman said: "The recording of incoming calls to Revenue call centres for security and training purposes has been a standard feature of Revenue's public telephone service in our high-volume customer service areas for the past eight years.
"The recording of outbound calls had to be added for specific areas of Revenue work last year because of Irish Payment Service (IPS) requirements."
