Irish employees are the sixth most likely to call in sick when actually healthy at least once a year, a study has found.

Ireland placed sixth on a list of ten EU countries, with 31pc of Irish workers calling in sick when they are actually healthy at least once per year.

The study, carried out by conference call firm Powwownow, put France at the top of the list with a stunning 58pc of workers feigning illness at least once a year.

Germany was second on the list at 49pc, making France the only country surveyed where more than half of workers would fake sickness.

Sweden and the Netherlands were at the bottom, with 15pc and 11pc.

Jason Downes, Powwownow Managing Director, said that European bosses could learn something from these countries’ work-life balances.

“It’s fascinating that Dutch and Swedish workers are least likely to lie about being sick, as they also have the most favourable work-life balance in Europe,” he told the Irish Mirror.

"The two certainly go hand-in-hand… if bosses look after staff by offering flexibility, they will be more willing to work.”
