Respite centre hit by tuberculosis outbreak

A severe outbreak of tuberculosis has been confirmed at a day respite centre in Co Kildare.

The outbreak at the St Raphael's day centre, Celbridge, is believed to have affected both residents and staff. It was first reported at the end of January.

The centre has over 170 residents and 425 staff and provides day training, employment services and residential services, as well as a respite service to over 320 children and adults.

Management have reportedly taken great steps to contain the spread of the disease.

Centre director Claire Dempsey refused to confirm exactly how many individuals are involved to "protect individual privacy".
