Residents evacuated after fire in apartment block

A BLAZE broke out in the underground car park of an apartment complex in Athy, Co Kildare last night, leaving several families terrified and forced to evacuate their homes.

It is understand that the fire, on Athy’s Nelson Street, occurred between the hours of 8.30pm and 9pm, when a van in the underground car park went up in flames.

No one was injured in the incident, and it is believed that the majority of the apartments in the ‘Harbour’ complex are vacant.

A spokesperson for the gardai in Athy said that they have launched an investigation into the incident, which seen the occupants of the complex forced to abandon their homes for a period of time. 

“It was a van inside, in the underground car park.  We are investigating the circumstances, but it is in the early stages.  There is a lot of smoke damage, but there were no injuries,” the spokesperson said.

Four units of the fire brigade, from Kildare and Laois, were at the scene.

The scene has been preserved for forensic examinations.
