Rescue teams frustrated by record level of callouts

RESCUE teams have received a "completely unprecedented" number of callouts so far this year, as motorists continue to use roads that are impassable in the persistently icy conditions.

Dublin and Wicklow mountain rescue teams have already been called out 42 times in the first three months of this year.

In the six days between Holy Thursday and yesterday, team members were forced to head up into the mountains 12 times.

Most of the callouts are from motorists who have become trapped on the notorious Sally Gap or Wicklow Gap.
