Rescue drama as trawler hits the rocks

THE crew of a Spanish trawler had to be rescued and brought ashore for their own safety after it ran aground on Bere Island off the west Cork coast.

The 'Nuevo Ria Aldan' hit rocks under Ardnakinna Lighthouse at the entrance to Berrehaven harbour at about 5am on Saturday.

The 11 crew members on board escaped injury and were brought ashore by the Castletownbere RNLI Lifeboat.

The 36-metre trawler remained docked in Castletownbere port while a boat team from the Castletownbere Coastguard searched the area for pollution from leaking oil.

The 'Nuevo Ria Aldan' was successfully refloated on high tide at about 3.30pm that afternoon.

The coastguard helicopter remained on standby throughout the rescue operation, which was co-ordinated by Valentia Island's Marine Rescue Co-ordination centre.

The coastguard's Shannon-based helicopter was also alerted.
