Report urges moves to cut school costs
Book rental schemes in every school, generic uniforms and a ban on workbooks have been recommended in a new report on reducing costs for parents, writes Katherine Donnelly.
The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Education and Social Protection also wants strict controls on voluntary contributions, if not a complete ban.
The committee has also criticised school patrons for a "vacuum" of leadership.
Its report also recommends that schools establish finance committees to oversee the funding and expenditure requirements of pupils, parents and schools.
The committee said it hoped the report, published yesterday, would help Irish educational policy to return to the value of free education.
