Reilly waits to approve Shine deal

A LANDMARK settlement for victims of struck-off consultant Michael Shine will not be approved by Health Minister James Reilly until he is satisfied that "everyone affected by the abuse" is catered for.

Earlier this month, 112 former patients of Shine reached a multi-million euro settlement with the religious order that ran Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

The settlement has to be approved by Mr Reilly because the order -- the Medical Missionaries of Mary -- agreed to protect the State from any abuse claims when it sold the hospital to the State in 1997.
