Grannies and school goers have been credited with bringing the Yes vote across the line in the Midlands constituency of Laois-Offaly.

The Yes vote in the same-sex marriage referendum triumphed by 56.8pc after a total of 63,297 constituents took the polls, a turnout of 58pc.

Fine Gael TD and vice chair of the party's LGBT group Marcella Corcoran Kennedy became emotional at the Portlaoise count centre as she described it as "a really defining moment for our history".

"It's just amazing.  I never thought I'd see it," the Laois-Offaly representative said.

"Every family in this country is going to be proud of the fact that we have done this as a society."

She told how a clerk from a polling station had remarked that it was one of the first times they had voters casting their ballot who were wearing school uniforms.

"The supplementary register had a lot of young people on it, 906 in Offaly which is really high.  It's heartening to see that young people are engaging in this particular campaign like no campaign before," she added.

Senator John Whelan echoed her sentiments, adding:  "I think a lot grannies had their say.  I am also really heartened to see the number of young people who have finally discovered the ballot box."

Meanwhile, the referendum to lower the age for Presidential candidates from 35 to 21 was strongly defeated, as 76pc of the electorate balloted against it.
