The owner of an owl that went missing from Co Kildare has said the bird is not dangerous and did not pose a threat to the public.

Tank, a female European eagle owl, escaped from her home in Curragh Grange in Newbridge, Co Kildare, on Friday. She was tracked down in Sallins yesterday evening.

Owner Lezley De Loughry told RTÉ Radio One that previous reports the bird, which has a two-metre wing span, and was dangerous were not true.

"She is a pet, that story grew wings," she said. "We had said that if anybody sees her, not to try to pick her up, because her talons are really strong, they could kill a small deer.

"She'd get scared and she'd flap her wings. She's definitely not going to be swooping down from the sky picking up children or deers or anything like that."

Tank was eventually found up a tree about 15km away in Sallins.
