Record 1,000 dolphins spotted

ALMOST 1,000 dolphins have been spotted off the Irish coast in a huge feeding group.

The dolphins were reported by fishermen and workers travelling to and from the Kinsale Head gas fields off the Cork coast. It is believed to be one of the biggest ever feeding groups of common dolphins off the Irish coast.

Gardai uncover heroin depot

Gardai have uncovered a heroin wholesale depot after raiding a house in Dublin.

A 21-year-old man who was arrested at the scene will be brought before Tallaght District Court today. Detectives made the seizure at Suncroft Avenue, in Tallaght, yesterday. Gardai seized 3.5kg of heroin, with a value of about €700,000.

Boat crew finds fisherman's body

THE body of a fisherman missing for almost four weeks after a small lobster boat sank was recovered by a lifeboat crew yesterday.

The 20ft vessel sank at Ringabella Bay, in Cork, on January 20. Another fisherman succeeded in swimming ashore. The deceased, Jerry Hegarty, was from the Mahon area.

Man in court over taxi hijacking

A MAN was brought to Limerick District Court yesterday after a taxi was hijacked when a gun was put to the driver's head.

Mark Ryan (24) of Lenihan Avenue, Prospect, Limerick, was charged with the hijacking of a taxi at Talbot Avenue, Limerick, last Saturday. He was remanded in custody until Thursday.
