Real-life cases of refused asylum

Recent case histories include:

• A person was issued with a UK student visa after producing a Tanzanian passport in Dar Es Salaam in March 2008 and arrived here two months later to claim asylum, which was refused and the appeal since dismissed.

• An applicant with a Nigerian passport was issued with a UK visit visa in Abuja in August 2009 and four months later came here to claim asylum, which was refused and an appeal dismissed.

• A person, who claimed to be Nigerian, was refused permission to enter the UK in May 2005 after travelling on her sister's passport with a substituted photograph. She subsequently claimed asylum but was turned down and classified as an absconder. In August 2006 she claimed asylum here as a Liberian but was refused.

• A woman, who gave her nationality as Portuguese to UK authorities, sponsored her Colombian husband for residence in the EU in 2003. Six years later she claimed asylum here as a native of Angola and last year was granted refugee status. This may now be revoked.
