Real cliffhanger as 'Rosie' rescued

Pat Flynn

A dog which fell from a cliff and became trapped on a ledge about 60 feet above the sea was rescued yesterday.

The one-year-old boxer bitch named 'Rosie', and owned by Pat and Margaret Considine, went missing with her mother on Monday during a 'farm day' on the Considines' land at Rehy West on the Loop Head Peninsula in Co Clare.

A search of the area failed to locate the animals. At around 11am yesterday, the crew of a fishing trawler spotted a dog on a ledge, 30 feet from the clifftop. The Doolin unit of the Coast Guard went to the scene and three team members were lowered on to the ledge to rescue the dog. Owner Margaret Considine said: "They were all absolutely brilliant and we are delighted but also very, very grateful. We will definitely be making a donation to the service. They were all so professional and brilliant."

There was no sign of the other dog.
