THE bedtime story is a national institution with half of parents regularly reading to their children before they go to sleep.

A survey of over 4,700 parents, which was conducted by the Bord Gais Energy Book Club, found that over 40pc of parents would like to spend more time reading bedtime stories to their children.

Marking the launch of the Read Together initiative, which will see some of Ireland's best-loved authors and illustrators hosting events in libraries in Dublin and Cork, Laureate na nOg Niamh Sharkey said sharing books creates lifelong readers.

"I believe that children are never too young to start loving books," she added.
