VHI subscribers or other members of the public have until 5pm this evening to apply to have a voice on the company's board.

Health Minister James Reilly is to fill four vacancies which currently exist on the board of the VHI.

He is seeking expressions of interest from anyone who wants to join the board and they will be judged on their "skills and experience" relevant to the functions of the VHI.

The new members will have a say on price increases and will be able to object to hikes such as the rises of six to 12.5pc which will come into force early next month. They will also receive the board members' remuneration of €11,970 a year.
